The PLAYERS: History Lesson

Let’s check out how golfers have handled TPC Sawgrass over their careers. I’ll give a quick history of the PLAYERS Championship for each golfer 50/1 and lower in the betting odds. As you’ll see with a lot of the results from this tournament it can be rather volatile. Tons of water and winds that can wreak havoc. Keep in mind that 2022 was the year where weather caused several delays and the tournament was finished on Wednesday. I’m joking but only slightly. Last year inclement weather forced a stoppage of play on Friday afternoon. This is certainly a tournament where tee times and weather draws play a huge role.

Scottie Scheffler +750

Scottie has mixed results at the PLAYERS. He obviously won last year but came 55th and missed the cut the previous two years. He did gain strokes putting here each of the last two years but that was prior to his recent issues with the flat stick.

Rory Mcllroy +1000

Rory at TPC Sawgrass honestly makes no sense. His best finish in the last three years was 35th sandwiched by two missed cuts. He actually won in 2019 after missing the cut in 2018. He had a great run from 2013 to 2016 with three top 8 finishes and a 12th place. He missed the cut in his first three appearances here. The greens here have not been friendly to Rory. He’s only gained strokes putting here three times in 13 appearances.

Xander Schauffele +1400

Xander finished 19th last year despite losing 3.6 strokes off the tee. He was 1 over par in his first two rounds and thanks to a great weekend finished at eight under. He had missed the cut at TPC Sawgrass in his previous three appearances. He did finish 2nd in his PLAYERS debut back in 2018 gaining 12.3 strokes tee to green.

Patrick  Cantlay +1800

Cantlay has been rather pedestrian overall at the PLAYERS. He finished 19th last year after missing the cut in the previous three years. He finished 23rd and 22nd in his first two appearances in 2017 and 2018. In his three missed cuts he had trouble off the tee and especially putting. He actually gained 5.8 strokes off the tee last year and was slightly positive in strokes gained putting.

Viktor Hovland +1800

Other than missing the cut in his PLAYERS debut, Hovland has faired well at the PLAYERS finishing 3rd last year and 9th in 2022. He put on a ball striking clinic in both years gaining 7.4 and 9.5 strokes on approach.

Max Homa +2200

Homa finished 6th here last year shooting eight under. He was rather pedestrian in the first two rounds shooting even par but came in strong on the weekend. On Sunday he went birdie, eagle, birdie on holes 10-12 to get to 2nd place before making double bogey on the 17th hole. In 2022 Homa finished 13th gaining 8.7 strokes tee to green. He missed the cut in 2021.

Collin Morikawa +2200

Last year was the first year that Collin faired well at Sawgrass shooting seven under in the first round. He ended up finishing at seven under after shooting 73, 72 and 71 in the final three rounds. He gained 9.4 strokes on approach but lost 2.4 strokes putting. Putting has been an issue here as he’s never gained strokes putting at Sawgrass. He missed the cut in 2022 and came 44th in 2021.

Sam Burns +2500

Burns hasn’t really been great at Sawgrass in three appearances. Last year he finished 35th after shooting four under in the 1st round he simply tread water shooting 73, 72 and 69 in the following three rounds. He finished 26th in 2022 mainly on the back of a strong putting performance. He missed the cut in his first appearance at the PLAYERS in 2021.

Justin Thomas +2500

Thomas has an interesting history at the PLAYERS. He obviously won back in 2021 gaining just under 13 strokes tee to green. He also came 3rd back in 2016 and 11th in 2018 but otherwise hasn’t done anything special. He’s never missed a cut here in eight appearances and has gained strokes tee to green in all but one appearance. He’s averaged 5.2 strokes tee to green over his eight years playing Sawgrass.

Jordan Spieth +3000

Spieth has not played well in the bulk of his nine appearances at the PLAYERS. Last year he finished 19th and came 4th in his debut back in 2014. Otherwise he has missed the cut five times and finished 48th and 41st. He has only gained strokes putting in three appearances here and only slightly positive in two of those.

Will Zalatoris +3000

The PLAYERS was the last tournament that Zalatoris played in 2023 and obviously wasn’t himself. He finished 73rd shooting 74, 71, 74 and 79. He played much better the previous two years finishing 26th in 2022 and 21st in 2021. He had a rough final round in 2022 shooting 74 and starting with a double bogey and bogey in his first five holes.

Ludvig Aberg +3000

Aberg has not yet played at TPC Sawgrass in his professional career. His caddie is Joe Skovron who was longtime caddie for Rickie Fowler. Skovron was Fowler’s caddie when he won the PLAYERS in 2015. He obviously has plenty of knowledge of the Stadium Course.

Tommy Fleetwood +3500

Fleetwood has played well at the PLAYERS. He’s only missed one cut in six appearances at Sawgrass. Last year he finished 27th but had played well until Sunday when he shot a 76 with three bogeys and two doubles. He was 21st in 2022. His two best finishes were 5th and 7th in 2019 and 2018. He gained 7.3 strokes off the tee in 2019 which is 2nd most of his career.

Hideki Matsuyama +4000

Matsuyama has played well at TPC Sawgrass over his career. He was leading after the 1st round when the tournament was canceled in 2020. He’s missed the cut twice in eight appearances here but otherwise has finished no worse than 23rd. He came 5th last year and was seven under par through 13 holes but ended up giving back three strokes down the stretch. He also had an 8th place finish in 2019 and 7th in 2016.

Wyndham Clark +4000

Wyndham missed the cut here in his first two tries but followed it up with a 27th place finish last year. He shot 69, 73, 69 and 72. He gained just under five strokes off the tee. He has gained strokes putting in all three appearances at TPC Sawgrass.

Cam Young +4500

Cam has had a rough go in his two appearances at TPC Sawgrass. He finished 51st last year due to rounds of 73 and 74 on Friday and Sunday. He missed the cut in 2022 after shooting a 77 on Friday.

Jason Day +4500

Day has played the PLAYERS 14 times in his career. He won back in 2016. In addition to the win he also has four other top 10 finishes. He’s missed the cut five times. He seems to be very comfortable on these greens only losing strokes putting four times in his 14 appearances.

Tony Finau +5000

Finau has not played well at the PLAYERS over the years. He’s missed the cut in four if seven years. His best finish was last year when he finished 19th mainly due to some good iron play. He also rode a hot putter in 2019 to a 22nd place gaining 5.4 strokes on the greens.
